OMMY ORANGE IS A BRILLIANT AUTHOR who is just at the start of his major literary career. Orange was born and raised in the city of Oakland in California. His mother is white and his father is Native American. Orange is an enrolled member of Oklahoma’s Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. In 2014, he was recognized as a MacDowell Fellow and Writing by Writers Fellow in 2016. He just graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts with a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Tommy Orange is the author of the groundbreaking novel There There. This is an exceptional debut novel that wrestles with the history of the American nation. Orange has a new take on this history as he showcases the side of America that only a few have ever seen or read. After he noticed that there is a big lack of stories and novels about urban native Americans, Orange decided to create a notable novel that explores a precious people who have a heritage of profound spirituality. The urban native Americans are being plagued by abuse, addiction and suicide. His novel There There revolves around twelve distinct characters. Each of Orange’s characters have personal reasons for going to the Big Oakland Powwow. Their lives are intertwined not only by their heritage but also by one act of violence that changes everything for them for good.

In his interview with Kate Laubernds, Orange revealed that he first thought of the idea for the book at the end of 2010. It was the time when he had just found out that he was about to have a son. However, the idea just stayed in his head for more than a year. He didn't start writing it until 2012. By the end of 2016, he handed out his final manuscript to his agent. He sold his novel to Knopf in 2017. His novel went through the meticulous editing process for the rest of the year. Tommy Orange says that to sum up, the writing process took him about five or six years. Tommy Orange received a lot of positive reviews for his debut novel. He is one of the new authors that the critics and readers alike praise. One of these positive reviews he received is from American author Pam Houston. She praised Orange’s book, saying “This is Tommy Orange. Remember his name.”

In an interview, Orange said that there are a lot of books that have inspired him to write a polyphonic novel like There There. He credits a number of books for inspiration, like Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, Roberto Bolaño’s The Savage Detectives, Marlon James’ A Brief History of Seven Killings, Jennifer Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad, Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine and John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces.

In 2017, Tommy Orange contributed an article in the Los Angeles Times. He entitled his article Thanksgiving is a tradition. It’s also a lie. In this article he confronted the facts about the American holiday and its violent past.
